This 25 year-old vintage photo of my 1951 Magnum Willys Pickup was taken near Elk Lake close to the Mt. St. Helens Monument border. Both the Willys and the volcano dome have grown in size since this photo was taken. This area is generally gated and is private or timber company property. During hunting season they open some gates for limited access to timber company lands. There are forest service roads for driving on the south and east/northeast sides of the volcano. All 4x4 travel right around the monument is essentially limited to established roads so you can leave the rock crawler at home or head to Naches two hours northeast of the volcano. You hardly need to lock the hubs in for travel around Mount St. Helens until November snows hit.
